The Association

The Registered Practical Nurses Association of Ontario (RPNAO) is a not-for-profit professional association for Ontario’s 38,000 Registered Practical Nurses (RPNs). Their role is to provide advocacy and member services in support of a quality health care system and the appropriate utilization of RPNs within that system. RPNAO (www.rpnao.org) has been in existence for almost 60 years. They are the one unified voice for RPNs in Ontario.

 

The Position

Reporting to the Executive Director, you will be responsible for the overall coordination and management of the development, implementation and evaluation of the RPNAO Innovation programs, projects, and research related to nursing professional development, retention and recruitment to meet the strategic goals of the Association, as established by the Board of Directors and the Executive Director. In addition, the position is responsible for development, planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of the management, finance and administrative processes related to the Nursing Innovation and Education Fund.

You will also be tasked with providing support upon request to other key areas of the organization as directed by the Executive Director.  

 

Responsibilities

  • Leads the design of the Nursing Innovation Program and develop and leads the Nursing Innovation and Education Fund Program to meet the strategic goals of the organization.

  • Provides expertise in the professional practice role of registered practical nurses in all sectors by remaining current on nursing issues in Ontario, Canada and Worldwide

  • Provides the strategic planning, in collaboration with the Executive Director for the Nursing Innovation Programs, projects and research related to professional practice, education, recruitment and retention services.  

  • Supervises and manages staff/students providing training and direction as required. Conducts performance reviews and ensures goals and objectives are met.

  • Manages budgets and accountabilities as defined by the funding sources. Monitors the budgets and assists with budget forecasts and administration of the budget.

  • Supports and conducts research related to RPN barriers to education. Engages in knowledge exchange, consultations with employers and others in professional nursing, and establishes linkages with community partners to promote the nursing profession. Disseminates government initiatives, practice issues and career opportunities and mentoring.

  • Provides a report for the quarterly publication of RPNAO Journal/ Nightingale News and annual report.

  • Develops strategies, projects and research subjects to promote the expanded depth and breadth of knowledge related to RPN education and practice with nurses, nursing leaders, employers and others. This involves activities including speaking engagements,  participation on committees, task forces, project teams, schools of nursing, at the regional, provincial, federal and regulatory level in order to meet the goals and objectives.

  • Manages the recruitment of members/key stakeholders for various professional development, research or project teams and accountable for the administration of the related undertaking, including the preparation of reports and deliverables to support project.

  • Undertakes research including analysis of research findings, in addition to actively participating, implementing and evaluating research.  Accountable for reports and deliverables to support research projects.

  • Engage, monitor and evaluate research consultants as required to support RPNAO’s strategic plan, Nursing Innovation programs and projects. Accountable to the Executive Director with reports on study findings and research outcomes.

Compensation: Salary + Benefits Package including participation in the Healthcare of Ontario Pension Plan (HOOP)

Qualifications

  • Master of Nursing / Leadership or related field required with PhD an asset

  • Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) preferred or Registered Nurse (RN)

  • Member of professional association in good standing.

  • Demonstrated experience in public/nursing administration, outcome measurement, project management, education and association management

  • Knowledge of the RPN professional practice and CNO standards and legislation.

  • Good working knowledge/understanding of association policies and procedures and strategic plan.

  • Extensive understanding of the Ontario, Canada and Worldwide health care systems, in particular nursing structures and education throughout all sectors.

  • Strong sense of vision and the ability to develop strategies to achieve projected outcome.

  • Strong program design, implementation and evaluation skills.  

  • Leadership skills to direct and motivate staff, and initiate and implement programs, policies and procedures in association settings; knowledge related to organization policies and practices to ensure these are applied appropriately in the management of staff.

  • Management skills to oversee, plan, organize and prioritize program and project activities within budget and time considerations.

  • Organizational skills to manage multiple activities simultaneously

  • Program design, planning and project management skills to organize and implement campaigns, projects, programs and research and to supervise development of communication materials.

  • Strong knowledge of; types of research methodologies; research process; ethical frameworks; and critical  evaluation required to support and conduct research projects

  • Analytical skills to conduct member needs assessments interpret data and evaluate program effectiveness.

  • High degree of professionalism for representing RPNAO at meetings with government, health care organizations, stakeholders, and the public

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills to prepare and present written materials and presentation skills to put forward such materials.

  • Interpersonal skills, diplomacy, conflict resolution skills, team building and consultation skills to facilitate multi-interest collaborative solutions to policy and implementation questions and concerns.

  • Social marketing and public relations skills to effectively promote association programs the RPNAO practice. Budgeting skills to formulate and monitor budgets, perform calculations, analyze variances to evaluate program effectiveness.

  • Computer literacy to use software and determine its applicability to specific programs.

  • Decision-making skills to set standards and priorities and allocate time and resources

  • Negotiating skills to develop agreements with consultants, members and related organizations.
