It is not very often that a career opportunity comes along where you can really make a difference, not just earn a pay check. This is a chance as a finance executive to help build a company from the ground up in an industry that is helping to green the continent. The senior leadership team is completely invested in the long term Recycle/Reuse vision of GEEP. They are looking forward to meeting a new fellow traveller - you!
Reporting to the President, you will be an integral part of the senior management team providing financial insight as well as strategic and creative input in growing the Company. Your role is to develop, maintain and improve a robust financial accounting system that delivers timely, accurate and consistent information and analysis so operations can properly prioritize and understand the impact of change and to refine and enforce effective financial controls throughout the Company. You will develop the finance staff into a strong, professional, reliable and efficient team. You will provide financial insight and guidance to other functional disciplines (Operations, Sales, Trading). You will lead an effective business planning process that starts at the operating floor level. You will individually and through your finance team, provide effective explanation and communication of results and appropriate analysis (cause and effect in explaining variances to the business plan).
GEEP's existing financial systems were built around a very centralized organizational structure. The systems and team need to be reengineered to support a less centralized structure and they need to be improved in terms of modernization and efficiency. There is a need to advance the analysis capabilities so that the numbers, meaning of the numbers and influence over the numbers is better understood.
Some of the challenges you will face are to quickly garner a sufficient understanding of the business and it's unique nuisances (electronics manufacturing is a relatively immature business) to be able to creatively apply established financial management practices. It will be a challenge to distinguish between facts rooted in resistance to change and facts rooted in constructive input. There is valuable knowledge within the Company that needs to be understood in order to make the required improvements. Your role will be to effectively and constructively challenge the "conventional wisdom". Finally, assessing the starting point for executing the necessary and desired improvements may be difficult.
Establish robust operational cost analysis and financial reporting systems. This will require almost a bottom up operational cost accounting and financial reporting system for all operating groups based on a consistent business model and related policy
Establish robust financial controls that ensure diligent cash management and accurate financial reporting
Build a team to support objectives. Based on the decentralized structure, this will entail development of finance resources in conjunction with General Managers at the operating locations.
Initially: Assess current financial tracking systems, policies and practices. Then prioritize corrective actions and develop an implementation plan
Initially: Assess the finance department staff to determine strengths. Then build an effective team to provide the high standards of performance.
Ongoing: Implement continuous improvement of the finance function
Contribute to the profitable growth of the Company as a key member of the leadership team
Location: Barrie, Ontario
University degree (Business, Finance, Economics or an MBA)
Accounting designation (CMA)
10+ years in senior finance/accounting roles
Experience in the Manufacturing sector
Experience with a multinational, multi divisional organization
Strong technical accounting skills (may have had previous experience as a Controller)
Strong budgeting and analysis skills
In-depth understanding of the application of Activity Based Costing methods
A proven leader with the ability to problem solve, plan and lead improvement initiatives, develop people and build teams
Able to work in a decentralized organization where the role of the senior management team is to provide support and guidance to the operating divisions
Desire to build a career through being part of a team that is building and growing a company
To sum up, we are looking for a seasoned Finance executive with a passion to build a company from the ground up. If you are a leader who likes to blaze the trail rather than merely follow the path, if you thrive in an atmosphere change and uncertainty, if you enjoy creating structure and process and have high standards for performance and if you would love to be part of an innovative leader in a new industry that is helping to green the planet, this career opportunity may be for you!
