A New Year! A New Adventure! What will Yours be Like?
In our last newsletter I asked these questions:
Have you set your goals for 2016?
Do you know what you want to achieve?
Do you have a clear picture of what your business will look like at this time next year?

What are your top goals? When considering this, keep in mind that in order to be fulfilled and truly happy we need balance. Many people are very successful in their business but often at the expense of their family and friends. That kind of success may result in a very lonely life. I suggest focusing on a top business and a top personal goal and working through the seven steps.
Step One: Choosing Your Top Goals
This will take some time. Buy a special journal book and start by making a wish list of all the things you would like to accomplish. Use one columns for business, another for personal goals.
Go for it! Have fun with it! It doesn't matter how impossible or unrealistic your goals seem. If it's in your heart, write it down. This is something you can keep and add to whenever something new pops up. If you are growing and changing, the list should as well.
Now for 2016. It's time to prioritize. What is your top goal that, when you achieve it, will have grown your business the most or given you the most satisfaction or provided the most value to your life and your business. Make it personal. This should be something you really want, not something you want to do to please someone else. Pick one for business and one for personal. This is not about HOW, this is about WHAT you really want to achieve and WHY it's important to you. Clarity is critical!
Now is the time to start asking the questions:
Why is this my most important goal? What will it mean to me when I accomplish it? What will my business look like then?
Am I willing to invest the time and energy necessary to achieve this goal?
Is there anyone who will be impacted by me choosing this goal that I should discuss and get agreement with?
Do I believe I can do it?
Belief in yourself and your abilities is crucial to your success. What you truly believe will become your reality. If you believe yourself to be limited in some way you will be. Albert Einstein and Thomas Edison were both told they were not very bright or capable. Aren't we glad they didn't believe it!
Studies have shown that we don't use even half of the capacity of our brains. You have more potential than you could ever use in a lifetime!
Finishing Step One, you now know what your top goals are, why they are so important to you and you have conviction you can achieve them. Let's move through the next steps with your business goal. You can follow the same steps for your personal one.
Step Two: Write It Down
Write it down. This moves it from a dream or wish to a real, concrete attainable goal. Be as specific and detailed as possible.
Step Three: Set A Deadline For Reaching Your Goal
A deadline creates urgency and helps you avoid procrastination. It will allow you to make a plan with sub-deadlines. When you are committed to it, you will be motivated to reach it.
Step Four: Make An Activity List
List all the things you can think of that you will need to do to achieve your goal. Use your journal and keep building your list as you go. The more complete the list the better you will be able to see what needs to be done to reach your goal.
Step Five: Organize The List Into A Plan
Organize your List by Sequence.
In what order do you need to do them? What comes first? What things have to wait until others are completed?
Prioritize - Remember the 80/20 Rule
Identify the high value activities (top 20%) and the low value activities (80%). Generally the low value activities are easier to do and can create a false sense of accomplishment because you are busy. The problem is you might be so busy doing the low value activities you don't have time to do the most important. The high value activities are the hardest or most complex and often the easiest to procrastinate on. Commit to doing them first.
What can you foresee that might get in your way? This isn't being negative, it's being proactive. Think now of ways to overcome those hurdles, if and when they do come.
What are you really good at? What do you like doing?
What are the activities that are critical for you to do and what could someone else do? If you focus on the things you excel at and that are critical for success and delegate the other parts to people who are good at those, you will have way more job satisfaction while reaching your goal more effectively and more efficiently. Don't be afraid to surround yourself with people who are better than you. Just make sure you give them credit for their part in attain the goal.
Step Six: Take Action Immediately!
The first step is always the hardest. The tendency is to procrastinate by thinking you need to plan more. It will be a work in progress. Just Get Going!
Step Seven: Do Something Every Day
Build your weekly and daily plan with these questions in mind. Ask yourself everyday:
Will this move me towards my goal?
What are the high value activities I need to do today, this week?
What are the activities that someone else can do?
